The drama is set in the rural Urhobo culture of Nigeria where the practice is prevalent. Conservative forces of tradition and superstition rise up against Emu Akpoveta, accusing her of attempts to destroy their indigenous culture. To them, abolishing the practice of female circumcision will encourage sexual Immorality and marital infidelity among women. Yet Emu goes ahead with the project to save females from the harmful effects of the practice and to restore their rights and identity. With conviction and militant resolve, she is able to mobilise the majority of the community on her side. With the strident and ornate voices of the characters in the play, Mabel Evwierhoma has brought a new vitality to the global dialogue for gender equality and justice.
