The idea of Mbari was popularised when the artists' and writers' club formed in Ibadan in 1961 chose Mbari as its name. What is Mbari? Mbari is actually Igbo religious mud sculpture. The community takes up the solemn artistic project of creating an Mbari in order that the gods may be induced to be creative and not destructive.
