Vainglory, crass materialism, a superiority complex, an arrogance that brooks no difference, and an utter disregard for, and unwillingness to understand, native customs and tradition-in the name of feminism-are the 'termites' that ruin the Imades' seemingly beautiful family, plunging it into the depths of despair and anguish. The play parades well-built characters set in their ways, with no chances of compromise or reconciliation with the differences of others. From the cocky French-speaking duo of Toyin and Vero, to the comic and garrulous Pidgin-speaking Martha, and the mysterious Mama and Josh, to the under-pressure John, the lines seem drawn for a catastrophe. Termites is a complete theatre fare that employs flashbacks, play-within-play, dance, songs and multilingualism to convey its enduring messages.
