In 1807 a ban on the international slave trade was promulgated by the British government, but the raids by the slavers continued in the creeks of the Niger Delta through collaboration between the foreign slave traders and powerful local merchants. Aru-Ama is an epic adventure story about Ijo communities, set during the era of the slave trade. At this delicate time the gods chose to test the mettle of Alagoa, one of the central characters of the story.
