All eighty-odd years of undulating drama are sandwiched between a prologue and an epilogue that may best be described in Soyinka-speak as faction or fact-based fiction. The prologue dates back two centuries and gives a plausible reconstruction of the experience of the British explorer, Richard Lander, off the banks of Agiama on the River nun. The epilogue, on the other hand describes what might have been.
