Description

The Travails Of A First Wife is a story of victimhood. The obvious victim is Zarah, whose monogamous, apparently 'modern', marriage to Ibrahim is shattered when he announces that he is taking not one but two wives-both on the same day. Her fate could hardly be worse in tradition bound society where her worth is measured by her biology. And yet, even as Ibrahim loudly exercises his freedom within hat same tradition to indulge his fancy., he, too, finds himself a victim of the machinations attendant on his self-indulgence, his inability to see that unearned privilege comes at a high price.
