Description
This play draws inspiration from the Yoruba myth of Moremi, a legendary heroine who sacrificed herself to infiltrate her people's enemies and secure their freedom. Set against the backdrop of the 1965 Agbekoya uprising—a peasant rebellion against oppressive taxation and governance—Morountodun focuses on Titubi, a sheltered and affluent young woman. Initially aligned with powerful authorities, she decides to go undercover among the rebellious farmers, only to be transformed by the reality of their struggle. In the process, she falls in love with the peasant leader who renames her “Morountodun” (“I have found a sweet thing”)—symbolizing her awakening, solidarity, and the merging of personal and social transformation.Through her journey, the play vividly illustrates themes of class conflict, political consciousness, women’s agency, and the costs of resistance .
